Day 1: Life is normal in a "foreign" country

We've been living in Europe since Spring of 2001. Shortly after arriving here, 9/11 happened. Everyone's lives were touched in some way with that fateful day. Americans living overseas felt disconnected and anxious. Then time passed and life continued to happen minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day.

Life is life and each family has its own rhythms and routines and they happen the same no matter where our homes may be. As a family who has made it through a military career and is now almost through a second career with the government, we have moved and moved and moved and still no matter where we are - it is home.

Home is where our stuff is. Home is where our people are. Home is where our furry family members are. It's where we go for love and comfort. It doesn't matter that it may be smack dab in the middle of a country far, far away from the rest of our families. This is something that only those who have lived the nomadic life of the military or government service can relate to and sympathize.

One of the best parts of living away and having your own place in the middle of "foreign" is that you can pick and choose which parts you want to let into your lives. The food is fun to explore and add to your regular rotation of meals, the culture is always interesting and good to learn about, and the language is really tricky to navigate at times.

More about language differences on another day of this 31 day challenge!
